St. Olaf announces restructure of men’s cross country/track and field staffs

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The St. Olaf College Athletic Department and Athletic Director Kelly Mahlum announced a restructuring of the coaching staff of the St. Olaf men's cross country and track and field programs, effective June 1, 2026, on Friday.

As part of the restructure, Antone Truss has been promoted to head men's track and field coach, while Brian Power will continue to lead the men's cross country program and coach the distance runners in track and field. John Hartpence will move into an assistant coach role for both the men's and women's track and field programs.

"This coaching restructure ensures both our men's cross country and men's track and field student-athletes receive the year-round support needed to create the best possible student-athlete experience," Mahlum said. "I am also happy to elevate a talented assistant coach in Antone, who is ready for the next step in his career, and we're excited that he will take that step here at St. Olaf."

Since joining the men's and women's track and field coaching staffs prior to the 2022-23 season, Truss has coached the combined events, hurdles, and high jump groups while helping St. Olaf to top-three men's finishes and top-four women's finishes at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Indoor and Outdoor Championships each season. He has coached four national qualifiers, two MIAC individual champions, and 15 All-MIAC (top three) performers. During his time on staff, the women's program has had 17 performances that currently rank on its all-time performers' list, including program records in the 60-meter hurdles, pentathlon, and 110-meter hurdles, and the men have had 11, including records in the 60-meter hurdles, heptathlon, and 110-meter hurdles. Truss will continue to coach the men's and women's multis and vertical jumps.

"I would like to thank Kelly and Coach Power for the opportunity to lead the men's track and field program," Truss said. "I feel immense honor being able to continue to build upon the values and the success of the program. Being able to work alongside Coach Power, who was my first coaching mentor, is an incredible feeling. The St. Olaf community has been incredibly welcoming since my first step on campus, and I can't wait to help continue that culture and strive to build champions here on the Hill. With the support from Kelly, the St. Olaf community, and the rest of the men's coaching staff, I believe we can continue building towards winning championships while helping student-athletes achieve academic success."

Power will continue to lead the men's cross country program that he has guided to four consecutive MIAC team titles and five consecutive top-20 national finishes. After a second-place conference finish in his first season, the Oles have won each of the last four MIAC Championships since 2022. Under Power's leadership, St. Olaf has finished as high as eighth in the country in 2024, while finishing 13th in 2023 and 2025, 14th in 2022, and 17th in 2021. The Oles have been ranked in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national poll every week during Power's time with the program, while producing five All-Americans, 17 USTFCCCA All-Region honorees, and 23 All-MIAC selections, while earning USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors each season.

"Antone has shown himself to be one of the rising stars in coaching and will be highly successful in this role," Power said. "Our student-athletes are fortunate to have a coach who cares so deeply and invests so much energy into their successes. His experience hosting large meets, ability to coach almost every event, and innate ability to help student-athletes set and reach goals is a unique and special gift. He has been a significant part of Ole Track & Field's success in the last few years, and I am confident that the men's track and field program will thrive under his leadership."
