NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's golf team tied Carleton College, 5-5, in the program's annual end-of-season Rusty Putter Match to retain the putter for another year on Saturday afternoon at Northfield Golf Club.
After a 5-4 win last year, St. Olaf kept possession of the putter thanks to a singles win from junior
Ike Vessey and winning two of the four-player matches by 2-1 margins. The pairings of sophomores
Will Black and
Jacob Quade and sophomore
Ryan Herbst and first year
Adam Drabek both picked up the majority of the points in their 18-hole, joint scoring format matches.
Outside of the one singles match, the two teams played three two-on-two matchups that consisted of three six-hole matches. Holes 1-6 were scramble match play, holes 7-12 were shamble best ball match play, and holes 13-18 were alternate shot match play.
St. Olaf took a 2-1 lead after the first six holes of the three four-player matchups before Carleton took a 4-3 lead by sweeping holes 7-12 in all three matches, coupled with Vessey's 3&1 singles win. The Knights were up 5-4 after the first two groups finished their final six-hole segment before Drabek and Herbst completed a 2UP win to force the 5-5 tie.
