LA CROSSE, Wis. – The St. Olaf College women's track and field team's 4x400-meter relay secured Second Team All-America honors with a 12th-place finish on the opening day of the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday at Roger Harring Stadium.
Running as the youngest relay in the field of 16, sophomore
Izzi Jaeckle and first years
Claire Stein,
Eleanor Semple, and
Cora DenHartog finished sixth in the first heat and 12th overall in 3:47.56, which was good for the final All-America slot. The quartet's time was the second-fastest in recorded program history, trailing only their school-record time of 3:44.74 from the last-chance meet at the same venue one week prior.
Thursday's race was that foursome's second time running as a relay this season, as Jaeckle, Stein, Semple, and DenHartog were St. Olaf's first 4x400-meter relay to qualify for the national meet since 2010.
Earlier in the day, Stein competed in the prelims of the 400-meter hurdles as St. Olaf's first national qualifier in the event since 2013 and its fourth overall. After clipping a hurdle on the final turn and falling to the track, the first year finished 19th (1:07.39) after two runners were disqualified and one did not finish.
