BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Senior
Leandro Ferreira of the St. Olaf College football team was named the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Football Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday after blocking a pair of kicks in Saturday's win over Carleton.
Ferreira blocked a field goal and an extra point for St. Olaf in its 36-19 home victory over Carleton in the 100th all-time meeting between the crosstown rivals. After blocking a field goal earlier in the game, the senior blocked an extra point that was returned for two points to keep the Oles ahead by two scores as the Knights were mounting a comeback.
St. Olaf led 24-6 in the third quarter before Carleton got within one score, 27-19, on a touchdown with 9:43 to go. Ferreira blocked the ensuing extra point and classmate
Max Karpinske scooped it up and ran it back for two points to keep the Oles ahead by two scores.
Earlier in the game, Ferreira blocked a 27-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter with St. Olaf holding a 3-0 lead. The pair of blocked kicks brought the Orlando, Fla. product's career total to three.
The Oles look to continue their unbeaten start to the season on Saturday, Sept. 28 with a trip to Augsburg for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
