AUSTIN, Texas – Recent St. Olaf College graduate
Sean Lonergan was named to the 2019-20 Academic All-America ® Division III Track & Field/Cross Country Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), as a First Team Academic All-America honoree on Tuesday.
After being recognized as a Third Team Academic All-America selection last year, Lonergan earned a spot on the first team following the final season of his career. He is St. Olaf's seventh First Team Academic All-America honoree and the third Ole to receive Academic All-America honors twice in his or her career.
Lonergan was one of 48 NCAA Division III student-athletes named to one of the three men's teams, one of 16 on the first team and one of 14 men to be a repeat honoree from last year. The Oak Park, Ill. native is the only student-athlete in the history of the St. Olaf men's track & field and cross country programs to earn Academic All-America honors.
A political science and economics double major with a 3.78 cumulative GPA, Lonergan was a five-time national qualifier in track & field and also competed at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships this past fall. This spring, he earned his third All-American honor in track & field after qualifying as the fifth seed in the mile before the NCAA Championships were canceled.
Lonergan ran to All-American honors in the mile (sixth) and 1,500 meters (fifth) last spring and picked up seven combined All-Conference honors – six in track, one in cross country – from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) over his career.
Academically, Lonergan was named to the MIAC Academic All-Conference teams four times after receiving the accolade twice in track and twice in cross country. He also picked up U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic honors three times and will earn a fourth this summer.
In order to be eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore athletic eligibility and have competed for one full calendar year at their current institution, while maintaining a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30. In men's track & field/cross country, nominees must participate in 50 percent of the competitions that their institution schedules in either cross country, indoor track & field or outdoor track & field.
