BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Three St. Olaf College student-athletes were recognized as one of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Athletes of the Week in their respective sports on Monday afternoon.
Junior
Catherine Moore was selected as the MIAC Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week, while senior
Jordan Embry and junior
Mark Thrower were honored as the MIAC Football Offensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively. All three student-athletes collected the first MIAC Athlete of the Week awards of their careers.
Moore recorded 33 kills (4.71 per set) and hit .509 from her spot on the outside to lead St. Olaf to back-to-back MIAC wins on the road this past weekend. The junior had 19 kills – her second-highest total of the season – while hitting .486 in a four-set win at Saint Ben's on Friday night before adding 14 kills while hitting .545 in a 3-0 victory at Concordia-Moorhead the next day.
Embry carried the ball 51 times for 270 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winning score with 21.7 seconds remaining, in St. Olaf's 33-28 victory at St. Scholastica on Saturday. Embry's 51 carries set a new school record and are the most by a rusher at any level of the NCAA this fall, while his 270 rushing yards are the second-highest total in recorded program history and the seventh-highest single-game total in NCAA Division III this season. The senior carried the ball 11 times and had all 70 of the Oles' yards on the game-winning drive that culminated in his third touchdown of the game.
Thrower recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown and blocked another punt in the Oles' win in Duluth on Saturday. Late in the second quarter, the junior got a piece of a punt that netted just four yards to set up the offense at the St. Scholastica 30-yard line, leading to a touchdown. Early in the third quarter, Thrower recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for the first touchdown of his collegiate career.
