NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Coming off its first-ever win in the tournament, the fourth-seeded St. Olaf College women's soccer team takes on top-seeded Carleton College in the semifinals of the 2022 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Women's Soccer Playoffs on Wednesday afternoon.
St. Olaf (10-6-1, 7-3-1 MIAC) earned the first postseason victory in program history by ousting fifth-seeded Saint Mary's University (Minn.) by a 2-1 margin on Tuesday afternoon to advance to the semifinals for the third time. The Oles' reward is a matchup regular-season champion Carleton (12-1-3, 8-0-3 MIAC) at Bell Field on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 2 p.m.
Per MIAC policy, admission will be charged for all postseason games. Tickets are $10 adults and $2 for students. Children five and under are admitted for free.
Live video and stats will be available for those unable to attend the game.
Wednesday's other semifinal features third-seeded St. Catherine University at the second-seeded College of Saint Benedict at 2 p.m. in Saint Joseph. The Wildcats knocked off sixth-seeded Macalester College, 3-1, in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. The winners of the two semifinals will play for the MIAC Playoffs title and an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. at the site of the highest remaining seed.
St. Olaf got goals in each half from sophomore
Sadie Klassen and senior
Tessa Anderson to build a 2-0 lead in Tuesday's quarterfinal and held on despite a late goal by Saint Mary's in a
2-1 final. The Oles had lost their opening game in each of their previous five appearances in the MIAC Playoffs and earned their spot in the semifinals for the first time since back-to-back semifinal appearances in 2012 and 2013.
Wednesday's semifinal marks the first-ever meeting between St. Olaf and Carleton. The Knights won the
regular-season meeting, 3-1, on Oct. 1, scoring the game's final three goals after Klassen gave St. Olaf an early lead with a 15th-minute penalty kick. Carleton broke a 1-1 halftime tie with two goals from Kathryn Kresse in the space of just over eight minutes early in the second half.
Carleton has won the last three head-to-head matchups in the series by a combined score of 11-3 since a 2-0 home win for St. Olaf on Oct. 9, 2018. That victory is the lone win for the Oles in the last eight meetings (1-6-1) dating back to 2014.
