MAMMOTH LAKES, Calif. – Sophomore
Lily Hubanks was the individual national champion to lead the St. Olaf College women's Nordic skiing to the team title in the 7.5K Classic, while the men's team was fifth, to open the U.S. Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) National Championships on Tuesday at Tamarack Cross Country Ski Center.
Hubanks claimed her second individual USCSA national title by finishing nearly two minutes ahead of the second-place finisher in 29:57.6 to help the St. Olaf women edge the University of Wyoming by two points for the team title. Ian Derauf.
After the event was moved up a day due to significant snowfall in the area, Hubanks added a title in the 7.5K classic to her first-place finish in the 15K Classic last season, while earning the fourth All-America accolade of her career. Junior
Julia Everest also produced her fourth All-America finish by placing sixth in 33:27.3, while senior
Lucia Wyland was 11th (34:39.1) to earn her first All-America accolade. Competing in her first USCSA National Championships, sophomore
Mira Tomten placed 18th (35:53.3) to give the Oles four of the top 20.
In his first appearance at the national meet, first year
Tait Myers was the top finisher for the St. Olaf men in 16th place in 28:11.8. Senior
Ian Derauf joined Myers in the top 20 in 19th place (28:35.8), while first year
Felix Taracena rounded out the Oles' three scorers in 34th (30:06.5). As a team, St. Olaf was fifth with 62 points, trailing Paul Smith's College (14), Western Colorado University (17), Clarkson University (25), and the University of Wyoming (36).
The USCSA National Championships continue on Wednesday, March 8 with the Skate Sprint.
