BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Senior linebacker
Tate Sauerwein and senior defensive back
Elijah Short of the St. Olaf College football team were named two of the three Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Football Athletes of the Week, as announced on Monday afternoon.
Sauerwein was selected as the MIAC Defensive Player of the Week and Short was honored as the MIAC Special Teams Player of the Week, as the duo were recognized for their performances in St. Olaf's 19-13 win over crosstown-rival Carleton College on Saturday as the Oles reclaimed possession of "The Goat". The MIAC Athlete of the Week accolades were the first of both Sauerwein and Short's careers.
On Saturday, Sauerwein recorded a career-high 12 total tackles (six solo), a sack, and forced a fumble to lead the Oles in tackles. The senior helped St. Olaf limit Carleton to 57 rushing yards and 2.5 yards per carry in the win.
Short played a key role both on defense and special teams, finishing with five tackles, three pass breakups, and a blocked extra point return. After the Knights scored to make it a 17-13 game with 6:18 to go, the senior scooped up a blocked extra point by fifth-year senior
Deonta Thomas and ran it back 88 yards for two points to push St. Olaf's lead to six. The play was the difference in the game after the Knights got in field-goal range in the final minute but had to go for it rather than kicking a potential game-tying field goal. Short also broke up two passes, including one in the end zone on fourth-and-goal, on the final series to preserve the win.
After running its record to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in MIAC play, St. Olaf will look to remain unbeaten when the College of St. Scholastica comes to Klein Field at Manitou for a 1 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, Oct. 19.
