LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – The St. Olaf College women's alpine skiing team recorded its second consecutive top-five finish at the U.S. Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) National Championships with a fifth-place finish in the slalom on Thursday at Whiteface Mountain.
After placing third in the giant slalom on Tuesday, St. Olaf was fifth out of 24 teams in the slalom with a time of 5:44.41 from its top-three performers on the day. Senior
Merumo Ishimaru paced the Oles by earning Second Team All-America honors for the second time in as many events at the USCSA National Championships.
Ishimaru, who was ninth in the giant slalom, added a second USCSA All-America accolade to her resume by finishing 14th with a time of 1:51.48 over the two runs. The senior sat 16th after the first round (56.71) before rising into the top 15 to secure All-America status with the 13th-fastest second run (54.77).
Junior
Kate Young was St. Olaf's second finisher in 27th (1:55.40), followed by sophomore
Abigail Hahs in 32nd (1:57.53). Fellow sophomores
Winter Johnson and
Jessica Stanton were also in the top 50 in 46th and 50th, respectively.
The men's slalom will be contested on Friday, March 8 before the dual slalom events are held on Saturday, March 9.
