ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Sophomore
Max Albertson, junior
Kevin Turlington, and senior
Sean Hartney of the St. Olaf College men's track and field team all earned Second Team All-America honors in their respective events on the opening day of the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday at Golisano Training Center.
Albertson finished 10th in the long jump, Turlington placed 11th in the 5,000-meter run, and Hartney took 16th in the one-mile run, as the trio of first-time national qualifiers all collected Second Team All-America honors by placing in the top 16. The three national qualifiers marked the joint-highest total for St. Olaf since 2017.
As St. Olaf's first national qualifier in the long jump since 2002 and the No. 17 seed, Albertson was 10th with a mark of 7.04 meters (23' 1 ¼") on his first attempt. He jumped 6.93 meters (22' 9") on his second attempt before fouling on his third jump, finishing one spot out of qualifying for the finals. The sophomore was the third national qualifier in the long jump in program history (Cory Dingels '02 twice, Trond Fredrickson '86 once) and each qualifier earned All-America honors.
Like Albertson, Turlington outperformed his seed in the 5,000-meter run, as the junior entered the meet as the No. 18 seed but finished 11th (14:27.39) with the second-fastest time of his career. After sitting 17th nine laps in, Turlington gradually worked his way up to post the second-highest finish in the event in program history for an Ole, trailing only the fourth-place finish of Jake Campbell '15 in 2015.
Hartney was also the No. 18 seed in the one-mile run and grabbed the final All-America spot in 16th (4:15.69) following a disqualification after Hartney originally finished 17th. Before the disqualification, the senior finished eighth in the second heat, as the top four in each heat plus the next two fastest times moved onto the final. Hartney was St. Olaf's first national qualifier in the mile since Sean Lonergan '20 in 2019 and the 11th for the program, with all 11 coming since 2012. Seven of the 12 qualifiers have earned All-America status.
St. Olaf's outdoor season is slated to begin at the WashU Distance Carnival on Friday, March 28 in St. Louis, Mo.
