ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Junior
Isabel Wyatt broke the St. Olaf College women's track and field team's all-time record in the 800-meter run during her ninth-place finish in the event at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday at Golisano Training Center.
Competing in her first national meet in track and field, Wyatt broke the previous school record of 2:11.81 set by Megan (Daymont) Thomas '03 by less than half a second with a time of 2:11.33. Wyatt's time was ninth in the field of 20 runners and was less than half a second from earning the junior a spot in the finals on Saturday. The junior earned Second Team All-America honors with the ninth-place performance.
The top-two individuals from each of the three heats plus the next two fastest times qualified for the finals. In her heat, Wyatt was just 0.28 seconds behind Kayla Kass of Stockton University, who grabbed the second spot in the heat to secure a spot in the finals.
Friday's performance wrapped up a standout indoor season for Wyatt, who was named the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Women's Indoor Co-Track Athlete of the Year after winning conference titles in the 800-meter run and 1,000-meter run. Wyatt also broke the school record in both events and was St. Olaf's first national qualifier in the event since 2003.
St. Olaf's outdoor season is slated to begin at the WashU Distance Carnival on Friday, March 28 in St. Louis, Mo.
