NORTHFIELD, Minn. – In its final preparation for the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the St. Olaf College men's track and field team won six events at the Ole Open on Saturday at Manitou Track.
In a meet that included a lightning delay of over an hour, St. Olaf won four events on the track and two field events in its first and only home meet of the season. After the meet, the Oles recognized their senior class and their families inside Porter Hall due to the inclement weather.
The meet included limited fields in several events, with competitors from the College of St. Scholastica, Saint John's University, Carleton College, and one runner from Hamline University. No team scores were kept.
Six different Oles accounted for St. Olaf's six first-place finishes. Junior
Gabe Estrada edged sophomore
Sean Hartney by 0.13 seconds in the 800-meter run (1:57.16), while first year
Angelo Fiataruolo passed senior
Brock Lawhead over the final lap to win the 3,000-meter run (9:13.29).
Junior
Matthew Nissen won the two-man 110-meter hurdles in 16.38 seconds, while sophomore
Tyler Gunderson outran two others in the 400-meter hurdles (59.59). In the field events, sophomore
Eh Ler Moo placed first in the long jump (6.32m, 20' 9 ") and first year
Ryan Edelman had the winning throw in the hammer throw (44.26m, 145' 2").
Edelman also broke onto St. Olaf's all-time top-10 list in the discus throw with a runner-up finish of 45.13 meters (148' 1"), which put him ninth in program history and third in the MIAC this season. Sophomore
Cade Feist added a second-place performance in the shot put (15.09m, 49' 6 ¼"), trailing only Trent Beseth of St. Scholastica's MIAC-leading mark of 15.28 meters (50' 1 ¾") in the field.
St. Olaf turns its attention to the MIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held Friday and Saturday, May 12-13 at Royal Stadium on the campus of Bethel University.
