Turlington and Skemp in top 10, No. 9 Oles third at NCAA North Regional

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The ninth-ranked St. Olaf College men's cross country team recorded a third-place finish at the NCAA Division III North Region Championships by placing five runners in the top 30 on Saturday at the Bill Huyck Championship Course.

Junior Kevin Turlington, senior Andrew Skemp, junior Ignatius Fitzgerald, junior Jack Deaver, and junior Gael Manzur Strandlund all placed in the top 30 to earn all-region honors and secure the third consecutive third-place regional finish for St. Olaf. The Oles finished with 87 points in the team standings, nine behind sixth-ranked UW-Whitewater and 47 behind top-ranked UW-La Crosse.

Turlington and Skemp both placed in the top 10 and were separated by less than four seconds in seventh and eighth, respectively, with times of 24:39.3 and 24:43.1. Turlington claimed his second all-region accolade by improving five spots from last year, while Skemp registered his first top-10 regional finish to secure his third all-region honor.

Competing in their first regional races, Fitzgerald, Deaver, and Manzur Strandlund crossed the line just over 10 seconds apart to join Turlington and Skemp in the all-region slots. Fitzgerald took 20th (25:02.0), Deaver was 23rd (25:07.1), and Manzur Strandlund took 29th (25:13.7) to round out the Oles' five scorers.

Senior Sean Hartney finished five spots outside the all-region range in 40th (35:21.7), while junior Parker Max placed 66th (25:54.7) in the field of 220 runners.

The third-place finish put the Oles in position to qualify for the 2024 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships, which will be held on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 12 p.m. at LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind. The field for the national meet will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 17 via press release on NCAA.com.
