Swim/dive teams both third at Roger Ahlman Invite

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's and women's swimming and diving teams both placed third at the two-day Roger Ahlman Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Macalester College's Riley Pool.

Highlighted by 10 event victories, the St. Olaf women were third of four teams with 699.5 points, trailing Gustavus Adolphus College (962.5) and Macalester College (944). The Ole men had five top-two performances on their way to a third-place finish with 508 points, finishing behind both Gustavus (1,158) and Macalester (818).

Junior Paige Steenblock won three individual events to lead the way for the St. Olaf women, posting the top times in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) this season in two events in the process. Steenblock's winning times of 2:09.51 in the 200-yard individual medley and 4:37.21 in the 400-yard individual medley lead the conference, while her first-place time of 2:11.33 in the 200-yard butterfly ranks third in the MIAC.

First year Olivia Small and sophomore Katie Homme added two first-place performances apiece individually, with Homme winning the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.39) and 100-yard freestyle (52.78) and Small sweeping the 100-yard backstroke (57.49) and 200-yard backstroke (2:04.55) titles. Homme's time in the 100 free and Small's in the 200 back are the top times in the MIAC this season. Homme was also the runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle (5:14.83).

In addition to her two backstroke wins, Small was part of a pair of first-place relays for the Oles, including swimming the MIAC's top split in the 100-yard backstroke (57.20) to lead off the 400-yard medley relay (3:57.67). Sophomore Samantha Sylvester, first year McKenna Hultgren, and senior Ellen Varley joined Small on the 400 medley relay, while Sylvester, Varley, and Homme completed the first-place 200-yard medley relay (1:48.40). Both relays logged the top times in the conference this season.

Varley also swam to a first-place result in the 100-yard butterfly in 58.60 seconds, which leads the MIAC thus far. First year Travis Elling posted the lone event win for the St. Olaf men in the 1,650-yard freestyle, registering the MIAC's second-fastest time of 17:10.07. Elling was also second in the 500-yard freestyle (4:57.41).

Four other Ole posted second-place performances, including junior Nick Starcevich swimming the No. 2 time in the MIAC this season in the 50-yard freestyle (21.26). Junior Aiden Yung was second in the 400-yard individual medley (4:20.22), sophomore Jack Homme took second in the 100-yard butterfly (52.48), and fifth-year senior Marcus Hauck placed second in the 100-yard backstroke (54.36).
