NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Senior
Demetri Lord of the St. Olaf College men's track and field team closed out his decorated career by competing in the decathlon at the St. Olaf Last Chance Multis on Wednesday and Thursday at Manitou Track.
Lord compiled 3,621 points in the six events he competed in but pulled out of the event after the 110-meter hurdles on Thursday as a result of receiving zero points in the high jump on Wednesday. The senior ended up sixth out of eight competitors as two participants also exited the competition before its completion. The meet served as the final opportunity for student-athletes to post qualifying scores for next week's NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
On Wednesday, Lord started the competition with a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash (11.17) and remained in second through three events after a fifth-place result in the long jump (6.39m, 20' 11 ¾") and a first-place performance in the shot put (11.87m, 38' 11 ½"). The shot-put result put Lord just two points behind UW-Eau Claire's Max Foland in the standings.
In the fourth event of the opening day, Lord missed his three attempts to clear 1.70 meters (5' 7") in the high jump, eliminating any chance of him posting an overall score that would qualify for the national meet. He closed the day by taking fourth in the 400-meter dash (51.36) to move up one spot to fifth with 2,848 points at the halfway point.
On Thursday, Lord elected to take one last run at the 110-meter hurdles in the first event of the day and clocked in in third place in 15.65 seconds before exiting the competition altogether. Lord concluded his career as one of the top performers in program history in the combined events by holding the school record in the heptathlon (4,897) and ranking fifth in the decathlon (6,315).
Lord was a two-time national qualifier in the heptathlon, earning Second Team All-America honors with a 13th-place finish this past March after finishing 16th in 2023. He finished his career as a two-time MIAC champion after sweeping the heptathlon and decathlon titles in 2023, while also posting four other top-five finishes in the conference in the combined events. In individual events, Lord ranks second on St. Olaf's all-time indoor list in the 60-meter dash (7.10) and the 60-meter hurdles (8.44), as well as ranking fourth on the outdoor list in the 100-meter dash (10.86) and fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.01).
The official qualifying lists for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be announced on Friday, May 17 via press release on NCAA.com.
