Men's track and field starts outdoor season at Bethel and Saint Mary's

ARDEN HILLS/WINONA, Minn. – The bulk of the St. Olaf College men's track and field team's roster began their outdoor seasons by competing at the Bethel Invitational and Cardinal Invitational on Saturday at Royal Stadium and Saint Mary's Track & Field Complex.

In its first weekend of competition as a full team, St. Olaf sent its throwers to Winona and the rest of its roster to Bethel. Sophomore Esosa Edo-Ohonba and first year Kale Kardonsky each won an event at Saint Mary's, while the Oles recorded 17 top-10 individual finishes at Bethel. Both meets were unscored.

In Winona, Edo-Ohonba won the discus throw with a mark of 39.93 meters (131' 0"), while Kardonsky posted a top-10 program mark while winning the shot put (15.50m, 50' 10 ¼"). Kardonsky's mark in the shot put ranks seventh on St. Olaf's all-time list. Edo-Ohonba also took third in the shot put (12.48m, 40' 11 ½"), while Kardonsky was fourth in the hammer throw (43.62m, 143' 1").

Senior Andrew Cogley was one of two event winners for the Oles at Bethel, as he won the javelin throw with a throw of 52.78 meters (173' 2"), which moved the senior into 10th place on St. Olaf's all-time list. First year Cooper Gundersen was the other, as Gundersen was first in the five-runner field in the 10,000-meter run (33:09.61).

Sophomore Max Albertson was the runner-up in the long jump and broke the previous meet record with a jump of 6.92 meters (22' 8 ½"). Albertson's jump ranks third in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) and 10th in program history.
Junior Cullen Moore led a 4-5-6 finish for the Oles in the 800-meter run in fourth (1:55.61), while sophomore Alex Bjork was one of four Oles in the top 10 in the 1,500-meter run in fourth (4:04.49).

Junior Jack Deaver ran a top-25 time in NCAA Division III this season in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to finish fifth (9:23.38). That time saw Deaver move into eighth on St. Olaf's all-time list and is the second-fastest in the conference.

St. Olaf will send groups to the University of St. Thomas Easter Meet in St. Paul and the Phil Esten Challenge (10K) in La Crosse, Wis. on Thursday, April 17.
