BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's golf team assumed sole possession of fourth place after two rounds of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Men's Golf Championships on day two of the tournament on Sunday at Edinburgh USA.
St. Olaf entered the day tied for fourth in the standings with Carleton College but was one of five teams to leapfrog round-one leader Concordia-Moorhead in round two. The Oles followed up a 303 (+15) on Saturday with a 307 (+19) on Sunday to leave St. Olaf (610, +34) eight shots behind Carleton (602, +26) and five shots ahead of Saint John's University (615, +39) in the team standings.
Sophomore
Ryan Herbst put together St. Olaf's low round of the day with a two-over 74 that saw him move up 14 spots into a tie for 10th through two rounds (152, +8). Herbst had all four of his birdies in the round on the front nine, helping him to a two-under 34 on the opening side.
After a two-over 74 on Saturday, junior
Ike Vessey carded a seven-over 79 on Sunday and sat in a tie for 12th (153, +9). Through 36 holes, the junior was tied for third in the field in par-four scoring (+2, 4.13). On Sunday, Vessey shot a one-under 35 on the front nine before a 44 on the back.
Junior
Quinn Nevell posted the Oles' second-best round of the day on Sunday with a three-over 75, which included an even-par 36 on the back nine, to rise nine spots into a tie for 30th (158, +14). Sophomore
Will Black put together a second-round 79 (+7) to end the round in a tie for 22nd (155, +11). Through 36 holes, Black ranked tied for fourth in the field with eight birdies and tied for sixth in par-four scoring (-2, 4.80).
Play in the final round of the tournament will begin at 8:48 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 29. Nevell will be the first Ole off the tees at 9:33 a.m., followed in nine-minute increments by senior
Isaac Schmidt, Black, Vessey, and Herbst.
