Men's track and field wins five events at Ole Opener

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's track and field team had five first-place finishes at the unscored Ole Opener on Saturday at Tostrud Center.

Junior Max Albertson won both the long jump and triple jump, while senior Lance Nemecek was just three one-hundredths of a second shy of the school record in the 600-meter run to highlight the five event victories on the day for the Oles.

Nemecek won the 600-meter run by nearly five seconds with a time of 1:21.55, which was .03 seconds shy of Kevin Skrip's 2016 school record. Sophomore Aaron Ruesink was the runner-up to Nemecek in 1:26.41 in his first meet as an Ole.

Albertson posted the top jumps of the day in the triple jump (13.35m, 43' 9 ¾") and the long jump (6.74m, 22' 1 ½"). The junior's mark in the triple jump ranks second in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) this season. Sophomore Rik Cumps was second to Albertson in the long jump with a mark of 6.53 meters (21' 5 ¼").

First year Tony Ali sprinted to a win in the 200-meter dash (23.34), with classmate Noah Hruby also in the top five in fourth (23.59). Senior Cullen Moore led four Oles in the top five in the 1,000-meter run with a first-place time of 2:31.78, followed by junior Christian Fells in second (2:32.81), first year Trigg Heimdal in third (2:33.53), and sophomore Lucas Olson in fifth (2:37.16). All four of those times rank in the top five in the conference this season.

Sophomore Cristian Escobar Pearson produced one of five second-place results for St. Olaf by taking second in the 60-meter dash (7.12). Ali was third in the event (7.19) after running a time of 7.13 seconds in the prelims to slot into sixth place on the Oles' all-time performers' list. Sophomore Austin McInturff and senior Owen Chamberlin also produced runner-up finishes on the track, with McIntruff doing so in the 400-meter run (51.62) and Chamberlin in the one-mile run (4:26.40).

St. Olaf will head to Macalester College for the Vanessa Seljeskog Classic on Saturday, Jan. 24.
