SONOMA, Calif. – Led by a top-10 finish from sophomore
Ryan Herbst, the St. Olaf College men's golf team finished sixth of seven teams at the Dominican Spring Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at Sonoma Golf Club.
Competing against six NCAA Division II programs while in California on spring break, St. Olaf posted a team score of 923 (+59) over the 54-hole event to finish eight shots ahead of Chaminade University. The Oles improved their team score in each round from 314 (+26) to 307 (+19) to 302 (+14) in the tournament, which consisted of 36 holes on Monday and 18 more on Tuesday.
Competing in his home state, Herbst tied for sixth in the field of 38 with a 54-hole score of 218 (+2) to finish five shots behind the individual medalist. For the tournament, the sophomore tied for the lead in par-four scoring (-1), was tied for fourth in birdies (12), and ranked tied for sixth in par-five scoring (-4). Herbst started the event with rounds of 73 (+3) and 70 (-2) to end day one in a tie for fourth before finishing with a one-over 73.
After shooting consecutive rounds of 76 (+4) on Monday, senior
Isaac Schmidt wrapped up the tournament with an even-par 72 to tie for 19th overall (224, +8). Schmidt carded four of his six birdies in the final round on the back nine and concluded the tournament ranked second in par-five scoring (-8) and third in birdies (13).
Sophomore
Will Black shot a 235 (+19) to tie for 28th, junior
Ike Vessey fired a 246 (+30) to tie for 35th, and junior
Quinn Nevell carded a 252 (+36) to tie for 37th.
After returning to Minnesota, the Oles will be back in action at the Bobby Krig Invite on Saturday and Sunday, April 18-19 at New Prague Golf Club and Le Sueur Country Club.
