Top-four sweep in 800 bolsters men's track and field in second-place conference finish

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's track and field team had the top-four finishers in the 800-meter run and finished the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships as the runner-up on Saturday at Manitou Track.

St. Olaf replicated its top-four sweep in the 800-meter run from the MIAC Indoor Championships on the final day of the meet to cement a second-place finish in the 11-team field behind No. 10-ranked Bethel University. The Oles compiled 146 points to finish 15 ahead of third-place Saint John's University in their fifth consecutive top-three finish at the outdoor conference meet.

The quartet of first year Paxon Myers, senior Cullen Moore, junior Christian Fells, and senior Lance Nemecek gave St. Olaf the top-four spots in the 800-meter run, led by Myers' first individual conference crown in 1:52.01. That time made Myers the No. 8 performer in the event in program history.

Moore (1:52.08) and Fells (1:53.79) joined Myers in the All-MIAC (top three) spots, while senior Lance Nemecek, the conference champion indoors, was fourth (1:54.79). First year Trigg Heimdal helped the Oles score 31 points in the event with a seventh-place performance (1:56.79).

After winning the 10,000-meter run the evening before, senior Kevin Turlington was the runner-up in the 10,000-meter run (14:31.95), finishing four seconds behind Saint John's University's Cole Stencel, who did the 1,500/5,000-meter run double. Sophomore Garrett Seppanen joined Turlington in the All-MIAC positions in third (14:40.87) as the top-three finishers all broke the facility record. First year Noah DuVivier claimed Honorable Mention All-MIAC honors in sixth (15:11.07).

Senior Jack Deaver led four Ole scorers in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a runner-up time of 9:27.75. Junior Lex Kaye and senior Ignatius Fitzgerald finished fourth (9:39.16) and sixth (9:46.73), respectively, while sophomore Micah Larsen-Schmidt was seventh (9:52.25) to give St. Olaf 22 points in the event.

St. Olaf's 4x400-meter relay of first year Aidan McKeever, Nemecek, Myers, and sophomore Austin McInturff claimed the runner-up spot in 3:19.17, while first year Tony Ali, sophomore Cristian Escobar Pearson, first year Abe Polzien, and junior Max Albertson were fourth in the 4x100-meter relay (42.64).

Escobar Pearson and McKeever were among the top four in the 400-meter hurdles with personal-best times. Escobar grabbed All-MIAC honors in third (54.53) with the No. 6 time on the Oles' all-time list, while McKeever was fourth (55.27).

St. Olaf will run at as many as three last-chance meets this week in its final attempts to qualify athletes for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
