Demetri Lord won the heptathlon and senior
Rebekah Salfer was the runner-up in the pentathlon, as the St. Olaf College men's and women's track and field teams got the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships under way with the multis on Friday and Saturday at the Leonard Center.
Lord became the first Ole to be crowned the MIAC champion in the heptathlon since Evan Sundquist in 2003-04, finishing 351 points ahead of Max Lelwica of Saint John's University in the field of 16 competitors with a score of 4,684 points. The junior won the 60-meter dash, the long jump, the 60-meter hurdles, and the pole vault on his way to moving up from third to second on St. Olaf's all-time heptathlon list with a score that ranks in the top 20 nationally.
Salfer earned her first All-MIAC accolade in the pentathlon by finishing second with a score of 3,210 points after winning two events and finishing in the top three in four of the five events. The senior's score was a personal-best score by over 100 points, moving Salfer up from seventh to fifth on St. Olaf's all-time pentathlon list. The score also currently ranks in the top 20 nationally, as Salfer finished 30 points behind Peyton Selle of Concordia-Moorhead, who won the pentathlon for the second year in a row.
To start the heptathlon on Friday, Lord tied his PR while winning the 60-meter dash in 7.17 seconds before setting an indoor PR in the long jump (6.31m, 20' 8 ½") for another first-place finish. The junior logged another PR in the shot put (11.64m, 38' 2 ¼") to finish second before closing out day one with a fifth-place result in the high jump (1.74m, 5' 8 ½") to carry a lead of 192 points into day two.
On Saturday, Lord won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.74 seconds before shattering his previous personal-best clearance in the pole vault by clearing 3.80 meters (12' 5 ½") to post another first-place finish. With a comfortable lead, he finished sixth in the 1,000-meter run (2:58.57) to secure the MIAC title.
Salfer started and ended the pentathlon with first-place finishes, opening the event with a win in the 60-meter hurdles (9.35) before closing it out with a victory in the 800-meter run (2:33.75). The senior was also second in the shot put (10.79m, 35' 5"), third in the long jump (5.03m, 16' 6"), and sixth in the high jump (1.46m, 4' 9 ½"), setting a PR in the long jump and an indoor PR in the shot put.
Sophomore
Lily Johnson and first year
Claire Keech also competed in the pentathlon for the Oles and both established personal-best scores over the five-event competition. Johnson smashed her previous PR by over 250 points by placing ninth (2,538), while Keech did so by over 150 points by finishing 10th (2,489).
Sophomores
Andrew Cogley and
Layton Borst also scored for St. Olaf in the heptathlon, with Cogley placing fifth (4,075) and Borst taking eighth (3,806). Cogley used first-place performances in the high jump (1.80m, 5' 10 ¾") and the 1,000-meter run (2:46.93) to move up from 10th to eighth on St. Olaf's all-time list, while Borst highlighted the two days with a first-place showing in the pole vault (3.80m, 12' 5 ½").
