ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Senior
Logan Bocovich broke the school record in the 5,000-meter run and junior
Will Kelly added a top-four time of his own, as the duo represented the St. Olaf College men's track and field team at the WashU Distance Carnival on Saturday evening at Bushyhead Track.
Bocovich broke the nine-year old program record set by seven-time All-American Grant Wintheiser '15 by less than two-tenths of a second by clocking in at 14:14.49 to finish second, while Kelly broke his previous personal-best time by nearly 25 seconds to finish fourth in 14:18.74. The meet marked the first performances of the outdoor season for the Oles.
After entering the meet fifth on St. Olaf's all-time list in the event, Bocovich rose to the top by topping Wintheiser's time of 14:14.66 from the 2014 Drake Relays by 0.17 seconds to post the top finish by an NCAA Division III runner in the meet. The lone runner to finish ahead of the senior was Noah Hufnagel of NCAA Division I Southern Indiana University, who finished in 14:05.50.
Kelly was not far behind Bocovich in fourth place and was second to his teammates among NCAA Division III competitors by crossing the line in 14:18.74. The time broke the junior's previous PR of 14:43.14 from the Tomcat Twilight on April 13, 2022 by nearly 25 seconds, as he moved up from 10th to fourth on St. Olaf's all-time list. Bocovich and Kelly's times both rank in the top six nationally at the early stage of the outdoor season.
In its first outdoor meet as an entire team, St. Olaf heads to the Tomcat Invitational at the University of St. Thomas on Friday, April 7 at 3 p.m.
