DES MOINES, Iowa – Five members of the St. Olaf College men's and women's track and field teams ran in distance events on the opening night of the 114th Drake Relays on Thursday evening at Drake Stadium.
As the lone member of St. Olaf's men's team competing at the meet, senior
Will Kelly broke his own school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to highlight the night for the Oles. On the women's side, junior
Sofia Carlson ran in the unseeded 5,000-meter run, while junior
Alison Bode, senior
Bella Call, and sophomore
Lauren Walda ran in the 10,000-meter run.
Kelly broke his own school record of 8:53.30 set at last year's NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships by less than a second with a fifth-place finish in 8:52.99. The senior remained ranked sixth in the country in the event after shaving over two seconds off his previous season-best time of 8:55.17. Kelly was one of six NCAA Division III runners in the field of 32 and was the second-highest finisher out of the six.
Bode, who holds St. Olaf's program record in the event, led the three Oles in the women's 10,000-meter run with an 11th-place finish in 35:34.19. Walda rose from sixth to fourth on St. Olaf's all-time list in the event with a near 20-second PR while placing 16th in 36:36.96. In the first 10K race of her career, Call broke onto the program's all-time list in seventh with a 19th-place result in 36:59.33. The trio were three of the four NCAA Division III runners in the field of 22, which included 15 runners from NCAA Division I programs.
In an event that included 12 NCAA Division I runners, Carlson finished 19th in the unseeded 5,000-meter run, crossing the line in 18:49.04.
St. Olaf will send a group of throwers to the Rider/Bolstorff Invitational at Macalester College on Saturday, April 27.
