ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Five members of the St. Olaf College men's track and field team competed at the Augustana Midwest Twilight Qualifier on Wednesday evening at Austin E. Knowlton Outdoor Athletic Complex.
Sophomore
Ignatius Fitzgerald ran in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, while junior
Olaf Coffey, senior
Ian Curtis, junior
Sean Hartney, and senior
David Lynn were in action in the 1,500-meter run. The meet served as the final opportunity for student-athletes to improve their chances at getting into the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Fitzgerald, who entered the meet 18th in the country in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:00.16), finished eighth in 9:05.34 for St. Olaf's highest finish of the evening. Six other runners posted times faster than Fitzgerald's season-best time, moving him outside of the top-22 spots by less than one-tenth of a second, barring any scratches.
Coffey logged the top time of the night of the four Oles in the 1,500-meter run, as three of the four registered personal-best times. Coffey won the first heat and was 14th overall with a PR of 3:51.17, with Curtis one spot back across the two heats in 15th with a PR of 3:51.24.
Hartney took 23rd overall in 3:54.97, while Lynn – who was competing in the event for just the fourth time in his collegiate career – knocked over 15 seconds off his previous PR in his 24th-place finish (3:56.80). Entering the night, the final cutoff time for qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the event was 3:48.29.
