ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Senior
Logan Bocovich earned All-America honors in the 10,000-meter run, as he and junior
Will Kelly both broke their own program records in their events on the opening day of the 2023 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday at Polisseni Track & Field Complex.
In addition to shattering his own school record, Bocovich established a new Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) record in the 10,000-meter run, securing All-America honors with a sixth-place finish in 29:15.93. Competing in the prelims of the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Kelly reset his program record and locked up a spot in Saturday's final with the 10th-fastest time in the prelims (8:53.30).
Running in a historically-fast field, Bocovich became St. Olaf's second-ever All-American in the 10,000-meter run, joining Phillip Meyer '15, who was fifth in 2015. The senior's time was a PR by just under 20 seconds, eclipsed his previous school record of 29:35.40 set earlier this season, surpassed the 40-year-old conference record of 29:26.10 set by Nic Mancieu of the University of St. Thomas in 1983, and ranks in the top 25 nationally on the
all-time NCAA Division III performers list compiled by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Bocovich moved up one spot in each of the final two laps, running his two fastest splits of the race, including a sub-1:04 final lap that was the second-fastest in the field.
Led by Alex Phillip of John Carroll University, who claimed his sixth individual national title overall with an NCAA Division III Championship record time of 28:37.89, the field of 22 runners saw 21 break the previous facility record. The 22
nd-place time of 30:21.81 would have won the national championship in eight different years and the final All-American time of 29:20.76 was the fastest in NCAA Division III history.
With the sixth-place finish in his first outdoor national meet, Bocovich added a second All-America accolade to his resume after placing eighth in cross country this fall. His performance earned St. Olaf three points in the team standings, leaving the Oles in a tie for 19th at the end of day one.
In his first appearance at a national meet in track and field, Kelly secured a spot in the finals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Saturday with his time of 8:53.30, which was good for 10th overall and fifth in heat two. The time broke the junior's previous school record of 8:56.03 from earlier this season, locking up a spot in the final based on time. Kelly will seek to become St. Olaf's sixth All-American in the event in the final on Saturday, May 27 at 11:30 a.m. CDT.
Senior
Lucas Kramarczuk is the lone Ole in action on day two of the meet on Friday, May 26, running in the prelims of the 110-meter hurdles at 4 p.m. CDT. Kramarczuk will hope to join Bocovich and Kelly on the track on Saturday, May 27, as Bocovich runs in the 5,000-meter run at 3 p.m. CDT.
