NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Senior
Will Kelly broke the school and conference records in the 5,000-meter run to headline the St. Olaf College men's track and field team's showings at the St. Olaf Invitational and Multi on Friday and Saturday at Tostrud Center.
Competing in a field with 22 seed times under 15:00 on Friday night, Kelly ran a time of 14:20.51 to finish second in the 5,000-meter run to Emmet Anderson, a redshirt sophomore at the University of Minnesota. Kelly's time broke the previous school record of 14:26.94 set by
Logan Bocovich '23 in 2022 and the previous Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) record of 14:22.34 set by Carleton College's Matthew Wilkinson in 2020.
On a national level, Kelly's converted time of 14:11.39 ranks fourth among NCAA Division III runners this season. Sophomore
Kevin Turlington also turned in a top-20 converted time in the country this season (14:29.25) by finishing sixth in 14:38.56, which saw Turlington break onto St. Olaf's all-time top-10 list in fourth.
Kelly's performance was one of five top-two finishes for St. Olaf at the meet, as the Oles took third out in the 12-team field with 83 points. Bethel University edged UW-Platteville by four points to top the field with 99 points, while Gustavus Adolphus College and Macalester College rounded out the top five with 80 and 79 points, respectively.
Sophomore
Alex Bittner posted the lone first-place finish of the meet for the Oles in the 800-meter run, edging four other runners, including sophomore
Lance Nemecek, by less than a second with a winning time of 1:57.08.
Junior
Andrew Cogley moved up one spot to seventh on St. Olaf's all-time list in the heptathlon with his second-place score of 4,348 points over the two-day multi event. The junior posted first-place finishes and personal bests in the long jump (6.15m, 20' 2 ¼"), high jump (1.86m, 6' 1 ¼"), and the 1,000-meter run (2:42.16), while also adding a PR in the shot put (10.75m, 35' 3 ¼"), to break his previous personal-best score by nearly 300 points.
Junior
Dylan Arnold posted the MIAC's joint second-highest clearance in the pole vault this season by clearing 4.45 meters (14' 7 ¼") to finish second in the event, while classmate
Eh Ler Moo added a runner-up finish in the long jump with a mark of 6.32 meters (20' 9"). Moo also ran on St. Olaf's second-place 4x200-meter relay (1:33.41) along with junior
Devin McNearny, senior
Henry Fisher, and first year
Max Albertson.
St. Olaf's next meet is the Gopher Classic at the University of Minnesota on Saturday, Feb. 3.
