Fitzgerald runs top-10 national time in steeplechase at Gary Wilson Invite

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Sophomore Ignatius Fitzgerald ran a top-10 time in the country in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to highlight the St. Olaf College men's track and field team's performances at the unscored Gary Wilson Invitational on Wednesday at the University of Minnesota Track & Field Stadium.

Fitzgerald placed fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:00.16, which ranks ninth in NCAA Division III and second in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) this season. The performance was also one of four for the Oles on the day that ranked on the program's all-time top-10 list, moving the sophomore up from ninth to third.

Sophomore Kevin Turlington, junior Sean Hartney, and senior Gabe Estrada joined Fitzgerald in posting top-10 program times on the track. In the open 3,000-meter steeplechase, Estrada's first-place time of 9:26.11 saw him move into 10th place on St. Olaf's all-time list. Senior Anders Cote finished 12th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:23.69, which is the third-fastest time in the MIAC this season.

Turlington and Hartney ran to their top-10 times in the 1,500-meter run and were separated by just seven one-hundredths of a second. Turlington placed 14th in 3:50.87 and Hartney was 15th in 30:50.94, which rank ninth and 10th on St. Olaf's list, third and fourth in the MIAC, and 27th and 28th in the country this season, respectively. Senior Ian Curtis was right behind the pair in 16th in 3:51.51, which is the fifth-fastest time in the conference this season.

First year Charlie Iyegha, junior Julian Cumps, and first year Max Albertson added top-10 finishes on the day for the Oles, with Iyegha and Cumps doing so in the javelin throw. Iyegha was fourth with a throw of 48.70 meters (159' 9"), which was just two inches shy of his season-best throw, while Cumps logged a personal-best, fifth-place throw of 48.66 meters (159' 8"). Albertson placed eighth in the long jump with a jump of 6.40 meters (21' 0") on his first attempt.

Senior Will Kelly will represent St. Olaf at the Drake Relays in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Thursday, April 25 at 6:48 p.m. The Oles will send three throwers to the Rider/Bolstorff Invitational at Macalester College on Saturday, April 27.
