Men's track and field has 21 top-10s at Joe Sweeney Invite

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's track and field team turned in 21 top-10 performances at the unscored Joe Sweeney Invitational on Wednesday at O'Shaughnessy Stadium on the campus of the University of St. Thomas.

Seven of St. Olaf's top-10 finishes came in the 1,500-meter run and 5,000-meter run and a further three were in the long jump. No team scores were kept at the meet, which included institutions from all three NCAA Divisions.

Senior Will Kelly, sophomore Kevin Turlington, and junior Andrew Skemp all turned in top-five times in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) in the 5,000-meter run. Kelly was the runner-up in the event in 14:20.34, which is the top time in the conference and ranks 30th in NCAA Division III this season. Turlington and Skemp both logged personal-best times, with Turlington finishing fourth (14:28.03) and Skemp seventh (14:36.14). Those times rank seventh and 10th on St. Olaf's all-time list and second and fifth in the MIAC this season, respectively.

Senior Ian Curtis, junior Olaf Coffey, senior Gabe Estrada, and sophomore Ignatius Fitzgerald all posted top-six times finishes in the 1,500-meter run, with Estrada and Fitzgerald running personal-best times as well. Curtis and Coffey were separated by just over three-tenths of a second in second (3:53.60) and third (3:53.91), respectively, while Estrada was fourth (3:55.10) and Fitzgerald was sixth (3:55.46).

St. Olaf's lone first-place performance of the meet came from first year Max Albertson, senior Henry Fisher, sophomore Cullen Moore, and sophomore Lance Nemecek in the 4x400-meter relay with a winning time of 3:21.82.

Albertson led a trio of top-10 finishes for the Oles in the long jump with a third-place mark of 6.61 meters (21' 8 ¼"). Junior Josh Charlton took sixth (6.29m, 20' 7 ¾") and senior Sam Rikkers placed 10th (20' 2 ¼"). Junior Julian Cumps had the top finish of the meet in the throws for St. Olaf with a fifth-place performance in the javelin throw (48.07m, 157' 8").

Moore and Nemecek added top-10 results in the 800-meter run and both logged personal-best times in the process. Nemecek was fifth in 1:54.48, which ranks fourth in the conference this season, while Moore was eighth in 1:54.92.

First year Will Lapinski, first year Jesse Olson, and senior Demetri Lord will represent St. Olaf in the decathlon to open the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday and Friday, May 2-3 at Carleton College's Laird Stadium. Action gets under way at 12 p.m. on Thursday and 10:30 a.m. on Friday.
