Nemecek sets meet record in 600 for men's track and field at the U of M

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's track and field team recorded 14 top-five finishes at the Gopher Classic on Saturday at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse.

Junior Lance Nemecek broke the meet record in the 600-meter run with a winning time of 1:22.66 to lead the way for St. Olaf. That time ranks third in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) this season and fifth on St. Olaf's all-time list. Junior Zach Martin, senior Otto Schmidt, and first year Thomas Madrid all were in the top five as well.

Seniors Sean Hartney and Olaf Coffey placed second and third, respectively, in the one-mile run. Hartney's time of 4:15.02 ranks fifth in the MIAC and 39th in NCAA Division III, while Coffey's time of 4:15.59 is also in the top 50 nationally.

Senior Andrew Skemp led a 2-3-4-5-6 finish for the Oles in the 3,000-meter run with a runner-up time of 8:37.98. Junior Gael Manzur Strandlund was the next to cross the line in 8:46.62, followed by junior Ignatius Fitzerald (8:51.04), junior Parker Max (8:51.73), and sophomore Quinn McCabe (8:51.76).

St. Olaf's 4x400-meter relay of first year Jackson Bullock, first year Cristian Escobar Pearson, Nemecek, and first year Austin McInturff ran the MIAC's second-fastest time in the event this season (3:26.82) to place fourth and break onto St. Olaf's all-time list in 10th. Bullock also took fourth in the 800-meter run (1:56.87), while Escobar Pearson was fourth in the 200-meter dash (23.03) with a time that was .03 seconds off the program's all-time list.

Sophomore Max Albertson was fourth overall – second among NCAA Division III participants – in the long jump with a mark of 6.55 meters (21' 6").

St. Olaf will send competitors to the UW-Stout Quad and UW-Whitewater Midwest Elite Invitational on Friday, Feb. 14.
