Ole men second after day two of MIAC Indoor Championships after Albertson and Hartney win titles

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Sophomore Max Albertson and senior Sean Hartney won individual conference titles for the St. Olaf College men's track and field team, as the Oles concluded day two of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships in second place on Friday at The Donald McNeely Spectrum.

Albertson won the long jump and Hartney was first in the one-mile run for two of five All-MIAC (top three) finishes for St. Olaf, which trailed only Bethel University's total of 102 points in the 11-team standings. The Oles earned 69 points through 11 events to hold a 1.5-point edge over host Saint John's University.

Albertson led almost the entire way in the long jump on his way to becoming St. Olaf's first indoor conference champion in the event since Cory Dingels '02 in 2002. Albertson posted a mark of 7.20 meters (23' 7 ½") on his second attempt and that mark stood until he jumped half an inch further on the final jump of the competition for a winning mark of 7.21 meters (23' 8"). The sophomore's mark was 1.5 inches shy of Dingels' program record, ranks 13th in NCAA Division III, and bettered his second-best distance on St. Olaf's all-time list.

Hartney led three Ole scorers in the one-mile run by edging Carleton College's Gabe Nichols in the final few meters with a time of 4:12.52 to win his first individual MIAC title. The senior's victory made him St. Olaf's first champion in the event since Sean Lonergan '20 in 2020, while his time slid onto the program's all-time top-10 list in 10th. St. Olaf scored 14 points in the event, with sophomore Ethan Martel (6th, 4:26.88) and senior Jackson Marsh (8th, 4:30.42) also scoring. Martel's sixth-place result gave the sophomore Honorable Mention All-MIAC honors as well.

St. Olaf added 21 points to its team total in the 5,000-meter run thanks to a 2-3-4-7 finish from junior Kevin Turlington, junior Gael Manzur Strandlund, senior Andrew Skemp, and junior Parker Max. Turlington and Manzur Strandlund both landed All-MIAC honors with their top-three performances in 14:48.07 and 14:59.11, while Skemp was just over half a second behind Manzur Strandlund in 14:59.72 to gather honorable-mention honors.

Junior Lance Nemecek picked up his first individual All-MIAC accolade with a third-place performance in the 800-meter run (1:55.40) and moved into 10th place on St. Olaf's all-time list in the process. Junior Cullen Moore (1:57.08) and first year Jackson Bullock (1:57.45) took two of the three honorable-mention spots in fifth and sixth, respectively.

Hartney, first year Gavin Vogel, sophomore Christian Fells, and senior Olaf Coffey ran to a fourth-place finish and Honorable Mention All-MIAC honors in the distance medley relay with a time of 10:22.95. First year Kale Kardonsky added a top-10 mark in program history in the weight throw by rising to eighth with a ninth-place toss of 15.13 meters (49' 7 ¾").

The final day of the MIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships will begin at noon on Saturday, March 1.
