After his honorable discharge in 1948, Dimick attended St. Cloud State University, graduating in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science in physical education and biology.

After earning his master’s degree from the University of Minnesota, Dimick spent 15 years teaching and coaching at high schools in Wisconsin and Minnesota, developing 10 championship teams, before joining the faculty of St. Olaf College in 1967.
