An all-conference guard in basketball, he served as team captain and was named Honor Athlete at graduation. After signing a professional baseball contract with the New York Giants in 1942, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and participated in a number of campaigns in the Pacific, most notable at Iwo Jima. He attended Japanese Language School at Yale University after the war, and eventually left the military--with the rank of major--to play both professional baseball and basketball. He entered the business world in the late 1940s and since 1982 has been president of the Pima Real Estate Group in Scottsdale, Ariz., where he makes his home. He recently formed a new corporation, ATR Properties, for which he serves as president and broker. Steffens also is a Stephens Minister at Ascension Luthern Church in Scottsdale, has served as a Job Net Counselor for the Luthern Social Ministry of the Southwest, and is a member of the Economic Development Committee for the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce
