After gradation, he played professional football for the New York Giants and was named their Rookie of the Year. When a knee injury ended his professional career after four years, he began teaching English at Elk River high School, where he served as an assistant football coach and head track and field coach from 1969 to 1975. From 1975 until his death in 1995, he owned and operated a family campground near Barnum Minn.
